Mr. Stumph came to Canon City from Pennsylvania with his family in 1939. He graduated from Canon City High School in 1954 and served in the United States Army stationed in Washington State from 1958 to 1960. He became a fireman with the Canon City Fire Department in September of 1960. While with the fire department, Mr. Stumph worked his way from fireman to Lieutenant and then finally to Captain. He served 29 years and retired from the fire department in August of 1989.
Throughout his career after retirement, Mr. Stumph worked around the community doing various jobs for friends and family. After retirement, he worked for a short time with Canon Supply. Mr. Stumph also spent time volunteering with Loaves and Fishes. However, most of all he enjoyed being a support to his wife, mentor to his children, working in his yard, fishing and of course being a grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 47 years; son, Michael "Mick" (Bonnie) Stumph, Canon City; daughters, Michele Smith, Nashville Tenn., Melody Janes, Pueblo West; grandsons, Philip Smith, Nashville, Brian Romanksi, Canon City, Collin Smith, Nashville, Garrett Franklin Smith, Nashville; granddaughters, Danielle (John) Selph-Eckman, Pueblo West, Leah Smith, Nashville, Lynette Clevenger, Pueblo West; great-grandsons Avery Smith, Pueblos West, Liam Selph-Eckman, Pueblo West; great-granddaughter Isabella Selph-Eckman, Pueblo West; brothers, John (Carol) Stumph, Canon City, Paul (Jean) Stumph, Rocky Ford; sisters, Audrey (John) McConnel, Grand Junction, Alma James, Pueblo, and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents brothers Philip Stumph and Henry Stumph.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday June 18, 2005, at the Holt Family funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mr. Sumph's name to Loaves and Fishes and/or Sangre deceits Hospice.
