She graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in May of 1922. She married James Arrant Atwell from Dallas, TX on May 30, 1932. They traveled extensively in this country and abroad during his 33 years, Navy career. She was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
She was predeceased in death by her husband, her parents, a brother Clarence Carter, two sisters, Lucille Hammond and Lottie Newell, a brother-in-law Steve Newell, a niece Barbara Hammond and a nephew Billy Stevens.
Thelma was a loving wife, sister, aunt and great aunt. Before moving to Danville in 1982 she was employed as a L.P.N. at Bestyet Nursing Home in Denver, CO for 33 years. She loved caring for the elderly. She gave her love and best of care until she retired at the age of 82.
She is survived by two sisters Vera Garabedian of Danville, VA, Empresa Dawson of Crestview, FL; a niece Yvonne Parrish of Danville, VA; nephews Carlton Carter of Kenbridge, VA, Wayne Carter of Hampton, TN; great nieces Peyton Parrish of Danville, VA, Jessica carter of Baltimore, MD, Elizabeth Dawson of Gulf Port, MI; and great nephews jay carter of Victoria, VA, Tim Carter Mooretown, VA, Kenneth Dawson of DeFuniak Springs, FL.
A graveside service will be held in Highland Burial Park on April 22, 2009 at 3:30 P.M. with the Reverend Carl Burger and the Reverend Daryl Joyce officiating.
