Douglas Frank Abear, 87, Crosby, died May 3, 2009, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in St. Paul.

He was born on May 12, 1921, in Dean Lake Township to Fred and Chleo (Terry) Abear. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, awarded a purple heart. He married Ethel "Toots" Marie Harms in 1942. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with Crow Wing County Highway Department, former Deerwood fireman, and founding member of the Range Rider Saddle Club. Doug was a local guitarist and musician and he was a past Deerwood City Council person, member and past council person of Salem Lutheran Church and the Walter Scott Erickson American Legion Post 557, Deerwood. After retirement Doug wintered in Deming, N.M.

He is survived by his sons, Dale (Marlene) Abear, Aitkin, and Terry (Colleen) Abear, Deerwood; daughters, Renee (Claude) Gilmer, Deerwood and Sue (Rick) Johnson, Deerwood; brothers, Donald Abear, Deerwood, and Gary Abear, Cleveland, Tenn.; sisters, Lila Savolainen, Nashwauk, and Phyllis Melby, Richfield; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ethel "Toots" in 1966; brothers, Larry and Richard Abear; and sisters, Mardell Avelsgaard and Beverly Michael.

Funeral services will be Fri., May 8, at 11 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood. Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery with full military honors given by the Walter Scott Erickson American Post. Friends may call on Thursday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Friday one hour prior to the services at the church.
