From GenForum: The second marriage was that of their daughter Lucinda {Packard} to John Wesley Doane, also of Pine River, which took place Dec. 18, 1857. Uncle Wesley was one year old when his parents, Erastus and Hester Stringham Doane, moved from Ontario County, New York, to Livingston County, Michigan, in 1834. As one of a family of five boys and three girls, he was accustomed to hard work and did it willingly and gladly. He and Lucinda had one daughter, Ida, who lived only two years and Lucinda passed away November 4, 1860. On August 12, 1861, Uncle Wesley enlisted for the Civil War in the Eighth Michigan Infantry. He was made a first lieutenant May 6, 1864, and that same day was wounded in his left knee in the Battle of the Wilderness. When honorably discharged on Aug. 17, 1864, he had served 3 years and 5 days. The next year Uncle Wesley married Martha Packard, the fourth child of Amasa and Mercy Goodwin Packard, and the sister of his first wife. She was the mother of our cousins, Amasa, Erastus, and Edith May Doane. In 1880 Aunt Martha died and later Uncle Wesley married Minnie L. May. May, whom many of us knew, was the mother of cousin Otto. Uncle Wesley died in 1924 and Aunt Minnie somewhat later. The Doane cemetery lots are in Alma. Uncle Wesley was one of the finest men I knew. He and father were good friends, and I like to think they were much alike--kindly, fun-loving, industrious, devoted to family, good citizens, Christian gentlemen.

John W. Doane, a prominent pioneer citizen of Gratiot and Isabella counties and a Civil War veteran, died early Friday morning at his home on South Main Street. Horton, Episcopal minister from Alma, officiating, with burial in Alma cemetery.

Obituary

John W. Doane was born in New York State, July 2, 1833, and died June 6, 1924. He came to Michigan in his early childhood and lived in Livingston county until the Civil War broke out. He then went into the army and served three years, being severely wounded while in the service. After the war he came to Gratiot County and was occupied in lumbering until about seventeen years ago, when he retired and came to Mt. Pleasant to live. He leaves a widow, a son, E. I. Doane of Alma, a daughter, Mrs. Edith Doane Kapp of Los Angeles, Calif., and three grandchildren to mourn their loss.

From the Doane Family Assn. book:
Son of Erastus Doane(7), Joseph(6), Daniel(5), Elnathan(4), Israel(3), Daniel(2), Deacon John Doane(1). B. at Sempronius, NY. D. Mt. Pleasant, MI, June 30, 1924. 1m 1857, Lucinda Packard, d. 1860, dau. of Amasa and Mercy Packard. 1 daughter. 2m. 1865, Martha Amine Packard, a sister of Lucinda. 4 children. She d. 1880. 3m, 1881, Minnie Mey, dau. of Julius and Wilhelmina Mey. One son. On reaching his majority, Mr. Doane decided on the life of a pioneer and, in 1854, bought 160 acres of wild land in Pine River Twp. He made subsequent purchases of land until he owned 280 acres. He enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his fellows and acted in the capacity of treasurer of his township. He was deeply interested in educational affairs and filled several offices in his district. Retiring from the farm, he moved to Mt. Pleasant, MI, where he bought an interest in a bank. He was a tall, handsome man, called by his great-grandchildren, "the white grandpa," because of his white hair and well-trimmed white beard. A member of the Episcopal Church.

From RootsWeb:
Md. to Lucinda Packard, Nov. 4, 1857. Md. to Martha Packard, March 17, 1865. Md. to Minnie May, unknown. Md. to Hortense Amanda Carr, Jan. 11, 1866. [Note: it is unclear how he could have been married to Martha and Hortense and producing children with them at the same time, and it is believed that the last spouse is inaccurate.]
