Blount, Dorothy Kelly

Dorothy Kelly Blount, a loving and devoted wife and mother from the Pleasant Plains community near Columbia, died Tuesday morning, May 5, 2009, in the emergency room of Flowers Hospital. She was 89.

Graveside services are at 10 a.m. Friday, May 8, 2009, in Pleasant Plains Baptist Cemetery, County Road 22 between Headland and Columbia, with Minister Brian Magnuson officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the mortuary in Headland.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, c/o Jerry Knowles, 5373 E. County Road 22, Headland, AL 36345.

Mrs. Blount was a lifelong resident of Henry County, daughter of the late Perry Othell Kelly and Pearl Lee Yance Kelly. She lived in the Pleasant Plains community near Columbia most of her lifetime. Mrs. Blount was a retired employee of Wex-Tex Manufacturing Co. in Ashford. She was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church and also the Columbia Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Blount was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Guy L. Blount Sr.; two sons, Guy L. (Gary) Blount Jr., and Gerald Q. (Sonny) Blount; a granddaughter, Kay Blount; four sisters, Belle Kelly Gamble, Bernice Kelly Parker, Jewel Kelly Harmon and Lillian Kelly Woody; and three brothers, Bernard Kelly, Carl Kelly and Kelsey Kelly.

Surviving relatives include her daughter, Dianne Blount Matthews and husband, Clark Matthews, Dothan; sisters-in-law, Betty Kelly, Columbus, Ga., and Frances Blount Hasty, Columbia; four grandchildren, Kelli Matthews Backus and husband, Kevin Backus, Dr. Ashley Clark Matthews, Mekki Matthews Klein and husband, Cory Klein, and Julie Blount Nunez and husband, Eddie Nunez; six great-grandchildren, Quinn Nunez, Natalie Nunez, McKenzie Backus, Chase Backus, Charlotte Backus and Ruschia Matthews; four nephews, Howard Parker, Clay Hasty, Paul Savell and Tony Savell; and five nieces, Connie Kirkland, Patti Parrish, Sandy Clift, Jean Aman and Paula Woody Sikes.

A very special thank you to Tonie Davis Covington and her family and to all the special friends and staff at Westside Terrace for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Blount.
