Obituary:
Elaine Claire Bennett, 83, formerly of Muncie, died Jan. 12 2004, at Manor Care Health Services in Anderson.
She was born at the family residence in Delaware Township, the daughter of Roger C. and Nadine DePoy Bennett, graduated from high school and attended Ball State University.
Miss Bennett worked as a budget officer in the Old State Department during World World II. Upon returning to Muncie, she finished her degree at Ball State University. She then returned to Washington, D.C., where she had lived for the past 60 years. She was an archivist at the National Archives and earned a master's degree from American University in Washington, D.C., in linguistics. She then became a member of the faculty at the University of Maryland, where she taught English and linguistics.
She was a lovely person, had a beautiful mind, and was kind, loving and thoughtful of others. She will be sorely missed. Surviving are her sister-in-law, Iris Bennett, Albany; her niece, Cheryl Gray (husband: Marty), Muncie; her nephew, Alan Bennett (wife: Mihaela), Muncie; a great-niece, Teresa Brown, Albany; a great-nephew, Jeffrey Brown, Albany; two cousins, Larry Burke (wife: Betty), Fort Wayne and Jack Burke (wife: Iris), Elgin, Ill.; and her longtime friend and companion, Betty J. Boone.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, Winifred and Walter DePoy; a sister, Jane Bennett and two brothers, Keith Bennett and Brian Minor.
Services will be in the DeSoto United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday with Pastor Tom Watt officiating. Burial will be in Godlove Cemetery near Albany.
Friends may call at the church one hour before services on Thursday.
Memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue Fund.
The Meeks Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
