OBITUARY
WILLIAM BOWERS
William Bowers, a well-known newspaperman and for years the day news editor of the Herald, died at the Revere House at 9:30 am yesterday. He was born in Concord in 1840. He first worked on the Post and went to the Herald in 1859. From that time, his service on the Herald was continuous, with the exception of two short periods during the War of the Rebellion. He began as a compositor and worked up to the position of day editor.
At the beginning of the war, he went out for three months with the Old Concord Artilllery( Fifth Massachusetts)and was in the first battle of Bull Run. Later, he enlisted with the famous crack regiment, the gallant Forty-fourth Massachusetts, and saw nine months service with it.
Mr. Bowers was one of the most popular members of the Press Club.
