Reid Neibauer Nibley I Know My Father Lives.

Reid Neibaur Nibley, first a father, then a pianist, teacher, and composer, passed quietly from mortality on February 25th surrounded by his beloved family.

His battle with cancer left him in a weakened state but he kept his characteristic smile and never murmured.

He was born on January 5, 1923 to Alexander and Agnes Sloan Nibley and was their fifth son, the sixth child being a girl.

When he was a young child, the family lived in Southern California where Reid began his music career on the piano at the age of 6.

Five years later he made his debut with the Glendale Symphony Orchestra and at 17 was soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Those early years were the beginning of an illustrious career which ended only with his death.

This included being principal pianist for the Utah Symphony for 10 years, concertizing throughout the world, as well as composing and arranging innumerable compositions.

He taught at the University of Utah, Michigan State, Interlocken, and Brigham Young University where he was Professor of Music and Pianist in Residence for 16 years. He loved teaching, and to honor him, the BYU School of Music originated a scholarship fund in his name in 2007.

His love for music was eclipsed only by his love for the Savior and for his family.

Reid married Marjorie Jean McBride on October 17, 1947 and from this union came four sons and two daughters.

The family moved many times to accommodate his studies and career and sustained him through it all.

Marjorie passed away in 2000 and in 2001, he married Nona Larkin Gallacher who brought an added measure of joy into the final years of his life.

Reid is survived by his wife, Nona, Provo, his children, Stephen (Heather), Provo, Breta Breeman, Midvale, Richard (Yoshie), Toyko, Japan, Garn, Salt Lake City, Virginia Nibley, Provo, and Jonathan (Ashlyn), Salt Lake City, step-sons, Michael (Claudine) Gallacher, Bothell, Washington, and Todd Gallacher, Seattle, Washington, a sister, Barbara Richards (Lynn), Pleasant Grove, 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his four older brothers and his wife.

Funeral services will be on Sat. at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant View Chapel, 660 Stadium Ave, Provo, with a viewing at the same location on Friday evening, 7-9 p.m. and Saturday morning, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Services are under the direction of Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary of Orem.

At Reid's request, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Reid Nibley Scholarship fund, BYU School of Music, Provo, Utah 84602
