DEATH OF DENNIS (Henry) SCHELL

Pioneer of Sanilac County—Well Known in Gladwin County.

Dennis Schell, aged 75 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Beadle, at Jeddo, Mich., Wednesday morning, Jan. 9, 1907, after an illness of two months. Mr. Schell was born in Brock township, Ont., April 10, 1832, and came with his parents to Michigan in June, 1842, arriving at Port Huron July 4, and on the 6th the family made their way up the shores of Lake Huron, soon after settling in the township of Worth, Sanilac county. His father cut a road to the first home he bought in 1843. When 21 years of age the son commenced work for himself, and in 1859, having married in 1854, settled in Speaker, Sanilac county, being one of the first settlers in the township, cutting his own road three-fourths of a mile to his 160 acres of wild land on which he built. He cleared many acres of land in the wilds of Sanilac county, living in Speaker 22 years, then moved to Grant township, St. Clair county, living there most of the time since.

During the last four years Mr. Schell made annual trips to Gladwin county to visit children and former neighbors, and was well known here. He is survived by eight children: Thomas, Herbert and William of Gladwin county; Charles of Burke, Idaho, Mrs. Sarah Stokan of Indian River, Cheboygan county, Mrs. William Stokan of Melvin, Mich., Mrs. Thomas Beadle of Jeddo, Mich., and Mrs. William Henderson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; also one sister, Mrs. Irvin Batchelor of Cove, Oregon.

The funeral was held at one o'clock Friday afternoon from the M. P. church, conducted by Rev. J. W. Mulholland. The text was found in the book of Job xiv : 14. Interment took place in Jeddo cemetery. In November, 1850, Mr. Schell espoused the cause of Christianity, to which he was ever after a faithful adherent. Gladwin County Record 1/17/1907
