Catherine Ann Battle was born in Tarboro, Edgecombe County, NC, 4th of 10 known children born to wealthy planter and manufacturer Col. Joel Battle & Mary Palmer Johnston. She was granddaughter of William Battle & Charity Horn; and gr-granddaughter of Elisha Battle & Elizabeth Ruth Sumner of "Cool Spring" Plantation in Edgecombe. On her maternal side, she was granddaughter of Col. Amos Johnston & Dorcas Williams of Edgecombe County, NC.

In about 1829, Catherine married Dr. John Wesley Lewis of "Mount Prospect" plantation in Leggett, Edgecombe Co. The couple would have 6 known children: Dr. Joel Battle Lewis (1830-1870), William Gaston Lewis (1835-1901), Exum Lewis (1837-1888), Christopher Columbus "Lum" Lewis (1840-1914), Anna Harrison Lewis (1851-1920), and Dr. Richard Henry Lewis (1832-1917).

John died in 1842, at the young age of 38. His 33-year old widow then moved to Chapel Hill, NC where she operated a boarding house. In 1845 she moved to Raleigh, where became a member of the First Baptist Church and was actively involved in relief for the poor. Catherine passed in 1879 at age 69.

Of their children, Joel became a doctor with a practice in Wake and Richard Lewis was a doctor in Kinston, Lenoir Co, NC. William Gaston Lewis was an engineer and Confederate veteran.

NOTE: ANOTHER GRAVESTONE FOR CATHERINE BATTLE LEWIS IS IN OLD CITY CEMETERY IN RALEIGH, THAT IS AN EXACT DUPLICATE OF THIS GRAVESTONE. I HAVE NO EXPLANATION HOW OR WHY SHE HAS A GRAVESTONE IN TWO CEMETERIES. HER HUSBAND ALSO HAS A STONE IN OAKWOOD AND OLD CITY CEMETERY.
