Thomas Jefferson Black, farmer and stock raiser, was born February 12, 1838 in Quincy, Illinois, the fourth of nine children to John Black and Sarah (Taylor) Black, natives of Kentucky. Thomas's father was a carpenter in Quincy until 1839 when the family moved to Knox Co., Missouri and settled upon a farm where his father died in 1867.

In 1879, Black married Priscilla Jane Ross, daughter of Enoch Ross, who gave birth to one child, Zora (who was born 3 March 1880), and Priscilla died 14 March 1880 in Knox County.

Thomas was a member of the 50th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia in the Civil War. He died 29 March 1921 in Hurdland and is buried at IOOF Cemetery in Knox Co.
