Erastus Foote to whom this medal (a Masonic relic) was issued was born at Waterbury, Conn., in 1777. At 23 he was admitted to the bar and began practice at Northampton, Mass. The following year he migrated to Camden, Me., and there continued practice of the law. Mr. Foote was admitted to Amity lodge A. F. and A. M. at Camden the year the lodge was chartered, 1801.

It was in November of 1806 that he became a member of Mark lodge at Cooperstown at the time when he was still residing in Camden and was then the worshipful master of Amity lodge. History is silent as to the occasion of Mr. Foote's joining the lodge at Cooperstown. Mr. Foote remained in Camden until after the war of 1812, when in 1815 he removed to Wiscasset, where he continued in the law and became active in politics.

Before Maine became a state he served as county attorney of Lincoln county in 1811, as a member of the Massachusetts Senate in 1812 and as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1819. When a member of the Massachusetts House he took an acive part in the movement of setting up a separate state government for Maine. His military title of colonel he received while serving in the Massachusetts militia in the war of 1812. When Maine obtained its statehood in 1820, Erastus Foote became its first attorney general and served until 1832.

He died at Wiscasset in 1856. [The Otsego Farmer & Republican (Cooperstown, NY), Fri., August 9, 1929, Page Three]
