She married Rev. Vernon Allen Gaines on 27 August 1953 in Alexandria, Virginia, but they later divorced on 7 December 1990 in Newport News, Virginia.

OBITUARY: Leila Gravlee Gaines, 57, of Newport News, VA. died April 3. She was a native of Sumiton and had lived in Newport News for the past 21 years. She was employed with the Newport News Public School System as Library Assistant for 15 years and was a charter member of Bethney Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 8 at Bell's Chapel in Sumiton with burial in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Rev. Doug Baker officiated.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol Ann Gaines of Hampton, VA; one son, Stephen Allen Gaines of Newport News, VA.; six sisters, Jo Corbett of California, Ava Sides of Dora, Mabel Miller of Gadsden, Elizabeth Moss of South Carolina, Myra Grady of Trussville and Carie Tidwell of Birmginahm; two brothers, Clarence Gravlee of California and Gaines Gravlee Sr. of Huntsville.
