The daughter of Orcas Island pioneers, Laura grew up in the Deer Harbor area. She was one of nine children and especially close to her twin brother Lawrence and sisters Willa and Mae. She came to the Big City (if you are from Orcas, B'ham IS the Big City) in the 1920s. She married Bernard Johnson. Their home on Samish Way was on the property now occupied by the Key Motel. It was built by Ben and his brothers. Laura and Ben lived in two tents during construction; one tent was for sleeping and the other was the kitchen/living room. Laura cooked on a woodburning stove to feed the hard-working Johnson brothers. She recalled, "I had to bake a cake every day."

Laura and Ben had no children of their own, but all her nieces and nephews (from both the Loos and the Johnson families) adored her and she loved them all. She has at least two namesakes: her niece Margaret Catherine Loos and her great niece Laura Schultz.
