Margareth Rissi was born in Wartau, St. Gallen, Switzterland October 9, 1803. Following her marriage to Christian Schlegel in the early 1820s, she moved to Oberschan, St. Gallen, Switzerland where she raised her family. In 1852, she joined her son-in-law Batholome Marti, daughter Anna Barbara Schlegel Marti and their children and traveled to LeHarve, France where they boarded the ship Mountaineer destined for the Port of
New Orleans, Louisiana. They arrived in the U.S. on April 16, 1852 and after a few days continued their journey up the Mississippi River to Scott County, Iowa.

Her husband, who was in poor health, remained in Oberschan where he died two and one half years later.
