Joseph Bowling was killed in the Southern Ry. Yards at East St. Louis, Tuesday, while filling his place as watchman. An entire train of twenty odd freight car passed over his body before he was discovered. Mr. Bowling came here from Jeffersonville to work on the section for the Air line. His work was so creditable that he always got extra pay for having the finest piece of track on the entire road and was finally promoted from time to time until his old age was against him and when the Southern took charge he was given a life lease on the watchman's place.

His remains were brought to Fairfield Wednesday night and taken to the home of G. E. Branch and on Thursday they were interred in the Jeffersonville cemetery.

Note that G.E. Branch and his wife, Prudence (Dye) Branch, adopted John Leo Branch (16298482), the son of Joseph and Samantha (Straley) Bowling, shortly after Samantha's death in December 1886. The date of birth for John Branch should be October 1885 and Jessie Bowling's should be October 1886, not 1888.
