John Leo Branch was born John Leo Bowling in October 1885 in Jeffersonville, Illinois. He was the son of Joseph P. Bowling (36029527) and Samantha (Straley) Caddy Bowling (32638053). John's mother died on 10 December 1886 and he was adopted by George and Prudence (Dye) Branch. He later married Evelyn Lord and together they had two sons: Edwin Lord Branch and Richard Leo Branch.
