Joseph was the 9th of 10 children (9 sons and 1 daughter) born of Solomon Brown (1737-1786) and his wife Jane Anderson (1739-1802). Joseph's siblings were: William (1760-1805), Silas (1761-1840), Solomon (1763-1837), Samuel (1765-1829), John (1767-1846), David (1769-1855), Seth (1771-1840), Mary, and Levi (1782-1817).
Joseph married Mary Montgomery by whom he had 4 children (1 son and 3 daughters): Mary L. (1800-1837), Solomon (1803-1868), Elizabeth M. (1808-1870), and Jane A. (1813-1892).
