D.M. McKinley or "Grand-dad" as he was called by everyone was of the old Southern type. He loved to talk of the by-gone days. He served in the Civil WAr from 1862 until the close of the war in 1865. He enlisted at the age of 18 years, in the Seventh Infantry, Col. Greggs Command. Captain J. Williams Browns Company. He was in several battles and wounded at Fort Donnelson. Mr. McKinley moved to Texas and settled in Gregg County. He moved to Eastland County after the Civil War, and to Callahan County in 1917 making his home in Rising Star, while in Eastland County. He married Miss Fannie Smith in 1873, and seven children were born to them, with one dying in infancy. At the age of 18, he joined the Presbyterian Church and was a member until he was 54 years old and then joined the Christian Church. Grand-dad will be missed in our Oplin community.
