Lorene Martin Huffman, 86, of Houston left her earthly home on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, to claim her inheritance in Heaven. She was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Pine Bluff, Miss., to Alton Martin and Ora Stafford Martin. Shortly thereafter the Martins moved to Montpelier so that their children could attend the public schools there. Lorene graduated from Montpelier Consolidated High School in 1940 as the Salutatorian of her class. She then attended Mississippi Delta Community College, formerly Sunflower Junior College.

On Aug. 30, 1941, she married the love of her life, Earl Huffman. They were soon separated by his call to the U.S. Army for service stateside and eventually Europe. After World War II, Mr. Huffman and Lorene purchased a farm in the Sparta community, where they lived and worked for more than 55 years.

In 1960, Lorene continued her education at Mississippi State University. She graduated in 1965 with honors and a B.S. degree in Elementary Education at the young age of 43. She earned a Master's degree in Guidance Education and Counseling from MSU in 1967. In 1972, she completed post-graduate work in Educational Psychology and Adult Education at MSU. Also in 1972, she was certified by the Mississippi State Board of Education as an Educational Psychometrist. Mrs. Huffman had a distinguished 28-year career in the Houston Public Schools until retiring because of Mr. Huffman's serious illness.

She was very active in local religious, civic and honorary organizations. She became a Christian at an early age and was known for her faithfulness in the duties and privileges of church membership. She taught all age groups in Sunday School, Training Union, classes for new Christians and served as president of the Women's Missionary Union. Lorene was known as a prayer warrior and soul winner. She was a member of the sanctuary choir and JOY, Just Older Youth.

Lorene was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an organization for outstanding female educators, serving as chapter vice president and treasurer. She was a charter member of the Friends of the Library of the local Carnegie Library and served on its board of directors. Lorene was a charter member of the Houston Pilot Club, served in several leadership roles in the organization, and was active in local projects for over 40 years. She was a member of local, state and national Republican Women's clubs, and local, state and national Cattlewomen's Association groups. One of her sources of greatest pride was membership in the Chuquatonchee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In 1979, Lorene was named as Houston's Outstanding Handicapped Professional Woman of the Year sponsored by the Pilot Club International, Sears Roebuck and Company, and the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. In January 1995, she was awarded the Voice of Democracy Certificate of Merit by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In 1997, she was the recipient of the prestigious Women of Distinction Award in recognition of her outstanding work in Delta Kappa Gamma International and education in general. Upon her retirement from the Houston Public School system, she was honored by the Mississippi Association of Educators with the Distinguished Service Award for 28 years of professional service in public education.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Huffman loved to travel and explore new places. They toured almost every state in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and traveled to Canada and Mexico.

Lorene's life was exemplified by a quick wit and an overwhelming love for God, country, family, friends and neighbors. She lived her life with purity of character, Christian integrity and honesty. Most importantly she loved to share her Christian faith. Therefore, she touched many lives in all age groups.
