His mother died when he was 6 years old as they were leaving Nauvoo, Illinois. His father, Orson Spencer was sent on a mission to England. He crossed the plains with his sisters, Ellen, Aurelia and Catherine and his brother, Howard Orson Spencer.

George married Leonora Taylor Horne on 10 Nov 1867 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
