John David BALDWIN, an employee of The Rochester Sentinel for 50 years until retiring July 20, 1978, died at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Chase Manor Nursing Home in Logansport. Mr. Baldwin, 79, had been ill for several weeks. He had lived in Rochester from birth until last summer when he moved to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas M. (Janet) LEFFERT, Rt. 2, Walton. He joined The Sentinel's commercial printing department out of Rochester High School in 1928. He worked in both the commercial and news printing departments as a compositor and Linotype operator, later becoming shop foreman. In 1973 when the newspaper sold its commercial printing business, Mr. Baldwin retired from regular composition work. For the next five years he was a member of The Sentinel's mailing department. He was born on a farm west of Rochester on Nov. 16, 1907 to Benjamin T. and Nora M. BALDWIN and moved to the city with his parents at the age of 12. He was married Jan. 11, 1930 in South Bend to Cleda R. THOMAS, who died June 26, 1963. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Rochester Masonic Lodge and the Manitou Moose Lodge. Surviving with the daughter are two grandchildren, Mrs. Kenneth (Debra) LEFFERT, Walto, and Daniel BRUBAKER, Kokomo; two step-grandchildren, Mrs. Stephen (Barbara) PORTER, Walton, and Mrs. Vic (Kathy) BOND, Indianapolis; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Charles BALDWIN, Kewanna, and a sister, Mrs. Joe (Anna) WILLIAMS, Fulton. Two brothers, Tom and Clarence [BALDWIN], preceded in death. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Edward OWENS officiating. Burial will be in the Sand Hill Cemetery in Richland Township. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and on Friday from 10 a.m. until services. Rochester Masonic Lodge rites will be at 7:30 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society.
