Biography: Joseph "Joe" Stanford was born Sept. 28, 1846 in Carroll County, Tennessee to Hiram Sr. and Elizabeth (Payne) Stanford. He served as a Private in the Civil War (Company C of Chambers Battalion, Texas Reserve Corps Infantry). He married Elizabeth Jane Lawrence. They had no children, but raised several nieces. On March 18, 1910 Joseph died in Greenville, TX. He was thrown from his horse. The fall broke his neck and killed him.
