This information is contained in a booklet written by Oscar Thomas Felts Atkins (brother to Joseph Edgar)in 1945:
"It was here [Hickory Plains, AR] on Feburary 23, 1877, that their [Thomas Jones Atkins and Elizabeth Jane Felts] sixth child, Joseph Edgar, was born. He spent his first six years there, then as an orphan was carried with his brothers and sisters to Weakley County, Tennessee.

He spent the first four years in the home of his Uncle Drew Felts who had made the trip to Arkansas and brought the children back, then the next four years with the other children in their housekeeping venture, then stayed a year or two with Alva while he batched here and there.

In the summer of 1899, he cut wood and did farm work for a while, but finally secured a clerkship in a drygoods store, first at Como, then later at Gleason, Tennessee, where he worked until 1905, then went to Shawnee, Oklahoma. In June 1906, he married Miss May {sic} Naylor, of near Union City, Tennessee, whom he had met while working in Gleason.

They established their home in Shawnee until about 1914, when he together with one T.S. Adams, and old Gleason, Tennessee, boy, bought a bankrupt stock of dry goods at Holdenville, Oklahomaa, and he moved there to take charge of it. He later converted it to a Mans Clothing Store, and continued in this business until June 1930, when the depression put him out.

Two children were born to them, Frank Thomas and Lucille. They are both grown and married now and have two children each of their own....J.E. and wife still maintain their home in Holdenville."
