According to a family history written by Oscar T. F. Atkins in 1945, Thomas J. Atkins died in 1881 and his wife, Betty (Elizabeth), died in 1883 leaving five children orphaned. Betty's brother, J. D. Felts left Tennessee and made the journey to Arkansas and took the children back to Tennessee with him. While waiting for their uncle to come for them part of the children stayed with their father's brother, John and the other part stayed with John's daughter, Nora Lackey and her husband and three children. The children were scattered among relatives in Tennessee. Sudie Bell, Betty's sister, took Augusta and Minnie. Oscar stayed with Martha Butler, his father's sister. Ed and Alva stayed with J. D. Felts (Uncle Drew, brother of their mother) and his wife and five children. Apparently from the narrative written by Oscar, the children were confused and lonely. They made an attempt at one point to reunite and live as a family together but this only lasted four years before the young, inexperienced siblings faced fact and realized they couldn't live on their own. They were scattered again.
