This is how I remember my father, Harold Reymond Berg, with my children, Nicole and Rigo. A man who had to be a warrior, so much of his life, was - at his essence - The kindest of men. I miss him every day.

Critters loved Harold, as much as he loved them - Even ones like Ravens. We had two, growing up. Never caged. Harold would walk outside and call to them and they would come swooping down to land on his arm or shoulder, delighted to see what treats he might share, like cat food! (They also loved to steal anything they could from visitor's open car windows.) Over the years we had dogs, cats, ravens, ducks, rabbits, a goose, a lamb, an opossum, rats, mice, hamsters,scorpions, lizards and snakes (including rattlers). Harold welcomed all of them - Well, maybe not the reptiles so much, but he tolerated them. In all my life, I never saw him express a moment's harshness toward one of God's creatures - Not a stern word, never a slap. He could be loud and imposing, when dealing with adults; but never with animals or children. He was never cruel and was always so gentle, for a big man. I believe animals could sense this; it is why they trusted him instantly.

Harold in the middle, flanked by his father Charles (Charley) and brother Floyd. I've been told the child is Floyd's daughter Joanne and the woman may be Floyd's wife Juanita - Though she also resembles an older Delphia (Harold's mother).

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, courtesy of the post-WWII GI Bill and his fabulous brain. He quit school in 9th grade, but because he read voraciously, he tested out the whole first year of college on the CLEP tests and only had to take three years of classes. The smartest man I've ever known.
