CHAPMAN -- Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Scherer Memorial Lutheran Church at Chapman for Lester Ivan Deines, 72, Chapman. He died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at a Chapman nursing home.

Mr. Deines farmed south of Chapman several years before he retired in 1995. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was decorated with a Bronze Star for heroism during the crossing of the Rhine River on March 25, 1945. He completed his military service as a military policeman in Shelby, Miss., until he was discharged in 1946.

He was born July 31, 1926, near Woodbine, the son of Henry and Ollie Riffel Deines. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1944, and he began his farming career on rented farmland while he was a high school student. He moved to Chapman from the farm in 1988. Mr. Deines was a member of the Scherer Memorial Lutheran Church at Chapman where he served on the church council. He also served on the Rinehart Township Board and the board at Chapman Valley Manor.

He was married to Vera F. Warner on Aug. 25, 1946, at Oak Hill. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Earl Deines, Chapman; two daughters, Donita Sellin, Wichita, and Lorinda Battishill, Chapman; two sisters, Arlene Hubnik, Abilene, and Jeanetta Farr, Peabody; a brother, Dale Deines, Salina; a foster sister, Lela Mae Trent, Wichita; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Deines was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Deines, in 1994.

Burial will be at Indian Hill Cemetery in Chapman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scherer Memorial Lutheran Church, Chapman Valley Manor or to the charity of the donor's choice and sent in care of the Londeen Funeral Chapel in Chapman.
