Bernice was the 10th child of Oscar and Lorinda Evaline (Gant) Ecord. They lived in Clayton except for 2 years in Bennington, KS when she was around age 6-8.

She married Jewett Ellis Cole Sep 28, 1921 at Clayton, KS. He farmed and worked in a store for several years near Clayton and Norcatur in Kansas. About 1937 they moved to Norton, KS where he worked for the County Highway Dept. In 1940 they moved to Marquette where he worked on the dam for Kanapolis Reservoir. Then he worked for McPherson County Highway Dept as a "finish man" until his death.
