Ernest was born in Mayfield (now Palo Alto), Santa Clara County, California. He was a cook in Company E, 159th Infantry, 40th Division, US Army in World War I from 11 Apr 1917 to 14 Jan 1918.
There has been a giant discrepancy about Ernest's birth year. It is listed in places as 13 Jan 1894 as well as 13 Jan 1895. 1900 Census says Jan 1896. The majority of sources say 13 Jan 1894, but that seems to conflict with his older brother Leland's certain birth date of 2 May 1893.
Finally! As of Feb 2022 Ernest was born 13 Jan 1896 according to his baptismal record at the Church of the Nativity in Menlo Park, Santa Clara County, California. Since Santa Clara County didn't do birth records back then, the Catholic church is the accepted authority for birth and baptism records.
His marker says WW II but he served in WW I.
