Machinists Mate 2nd Class R. J. Poncel, USN, was one of eight servicemen to drown following the capsizing of a liberty launch returning to the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVB-41) off Les Salins d'Hyeres, France on the evening of 16 February 1948.

MM2c Poncel was cited in the investigative report as: "supported in the water two men who could not swim. They were rescued. He is missing."

MM2c Poncel's wife was the former Miss Gloria June Chevalier (1925-1994), of Minneapolis, Minn.

Son of Alex Eugene and Bernadette (Genferouas) Poncel.
