He was born April 4, 1925, at Wainwright to the late Joseph E. and Anna A. Swaldo Davis and had resided in the area most of his life.
He attended the former Wainwright School.
He began working as a clayworker in his teenage years and had been employed at several area companies in various capacities, including as a clay miner.
He worked almost 40 years at Evans Pipe Co. and its successor, Superior Clay, at Uhrichsville, and retired from Superior Clay as a boiler fireman in 1987.
He was a loving and devoted family man.
He enjoyed working outdoors on his farm where he had resided for the past 57 years.
He was a member of the United Brick and Clayworkers of America and a life member of the National Rifle Assn.
He was also a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Dennison and the former St. Therese Catholic Church at Wainwright.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Jean E. McPeck Davis. They were married June 30, 1945.
Also surviving are three sons and two daughters, David A. (Linda D.) Davis, Frederick D. (Sheila) Davis, Ann M. Thomas (fiance, Jim Pretorius), Allan R. Davis, and Linda K. Davis Smith (Michael H. Smith), all of the Wainwright area; six grandchildren, Bryan Davis, Chad Davis, Brandy (Ralph Jr.) Smith, Ray Thomas, Lee (Jessica) Thomas and Jim Thomas; three great-grandsons; three step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; a brother and a sister, Floyd "Zeke" (Marge) Davis of Goshen and Helen (Louie) Dalpiaz of Dover; two brothers-in-law, Bill (Peggy) McPeck and Dick (Linda) McPeck, both of Uhrichsville; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Davis of Tuscarawas and Sondra McPeck of Wise, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert E. Davis.
In keeping with Joe's wishes, there will be no calling hours.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Dennison with Father Martin J. Ralko officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church's capital improvements fund.
