Mrs. Bowers was born on Jan. 15, 1908 in Southern Pines to the late Walter and Lucy Wicker Maples. She was chief operator for United Telephone Company of the Carolinas in Beaufort, S.C. where she worked for 30 years until such time as they changed over to dial telephones. She was a resident of Beaufort for 68 years.

Mrs. Bowers was a member of the Daughters of America, the Brenda Club, Helen Eng Circle, First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort and a former board member of the Women of the Church.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Elizabeth Bowers and Shirley Ann Buck.

Surviving are a son, Samuel Dee Bowers Jr. of Savannah, Ga.; three brothers, James Maples of Panama City, Fla., Ralph Maples of Lady Lake, Fla. and Eugene Maples of Southern Pines; three sisters, Esther Fitzgerald and Edith Maready, both of Southern Pines, Pauline Waddington of Fayetteville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren.
