Mabel was born to parents of English descent, who had come to America in 1886. Her father was a light house keeper on Isle Royal and then Raspberry Island, Lake Superior. He died in 1900, age 41. Mabel's mother later married William H Bell in Bayfield Wisconsin, where Mabel finished her schooling.

On 2 October 1917, she married Ed Prien and moved to Chelsea, Wisconsin. Mabel was a lovely woman with a big heart. As a youngster, I spent time with the Priens in Rib Lake, Wisconsin, who lived above their hardware store. I was fascinated by the store, but Aunt Mabel also introduced me to embroidery and guided my reading choices. I held her in high esteem, and admired her beautiful white hair and her smile.

She taught school for years in Rib Lake, and in retirement took up painting. Her painting of Raspberry Island lighthouse is on display at the Lighthouse museum on Madeline Island, Lake Superior, as is the "light" from the lighthouse served by Mabel's father.

Her death was unexpected and unusual. She and husband Ed, and another couple, had been out to dinner. On the way home in the car, there was much laughter, and in the midst of it all Mable suddenly was gone, just shy of her 77th birthday.

Mabel is fondly remembered by anyone who knew her, especially the niece writing this memorial. Donna Bell Cross.
