"TRAFFIC DEATH NEAR WEWOKA
Tulsan Killed by Automobile
Wewoka, Okla, April 3.
William Walter Thompson, 47, Tulsa, was killed in a weekend traffic accident two miles south of here on U. S. Highway 270 before the very eyes of a state trooper with whom he had tried to get a ride.
Trooper Leonard Kelsoe, Holdenville, an eye witness to the Wewoka tragedy, shouted a futile warning to Thompson, 47-year-old Tulsa steel worker, a moment before he walked in front of an automobile driven by Vernon Hawkins, 32, Wewoka oil field worker.
The patrolman had stopped to investigate an abandoned car when Thompson came up and asked for a ride into town. Informed this was in violation of regulations, Thompson turned and started up the highway and stepped into the path of the approaching car even as the patrolman yelled for him to look our for the automobile.
Thompson died of a fractured skull. Hawkins, the driver, accompanied by his wife, was returning home from his oil field job. The accident occurred about 1:15 a.m. The body was taken to Wewoka."
