Former Los Gatan Leora "Lee" Buckner died March 26 in Illinois, where she was residing, following a short illness. She was 89.
Born Nov. 15, 1907, in Menomonie, Wis., Buckner grew up on her parents' farm. As an adult, she moved to St. Louis, Mo., where she was a business administrator at Christian Welfare Hospital for 13 years.
She and husband H.E. "Pete" Buckner moved to California in 1943 and opened a large turkey farm next to the current site of Villa Felice restaurant and lodge in Los Gatos. They later sold the farm and began H.E. "Pete" Buckner Construction Co. of Los Gatos, which did work on many local buildings. Buckner served as business manager of her husband's firm.
After retirement, Buckner became involved with Girl Scouts and other activities benefiting children and youth. Friend Angela Ernstrom of Los Gatos recalls that even though Buckner had no children, she and Pete were like parents and grandparents to all the neighborhood children. An animal lover, Buckner was always ready to help a sick, hurt or abandoned animal and enjoyed teaching children how to care for their pets.
Following her husband's stroke, Buckner took an active role in a local support group for stroke victims and their families. Two years ago, she and her dog, Cougar, moved to Lebanon, Ill., to live closer to some of her many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services have been held, with inurnment at Los Gatos Memorial Park. Donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Northern California, 553 Pilgrim Ave., Suite C, Foster City, 94404.
