Emma Lane was born May 11, 1850 in what is now Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Mormon pioneers William West Lane & Mariah Burr (Clark) Lane. Her father was to lead a wagon train of church members to Utah, but both he and Emma's mother died of cholera just a few days into the trek, leaving Emma, her sisters & half siblings in the care of her eldest half brother Davis Clark, who was only 19. Amazingly, all the siblings in this group made it to Utah. Emma's half-sister Flora & her husband James O'Banion raised Emma, taking her with them and their children to Denver (then still part of Kansas Territory) in 1859. Again tragedy struck when Flora died in 1860. Flora's husband returned to Springville, Utah briefly in the Spring of 1861, but left, both the state and the Mormon church in June of 1861, returning with his children to Woodbine, Iowa.

Emma lived for awhile with O'Banion family members, and then went to live with the family of Cornelius Dunham. Emma taught school for 3 or 4 years, and on Sept 12, 1871 she married the Dunham's son, Zachary Taylor Dunham. Finally she had found a "lasting" family, as her marriage would endure 71 years, until her death in 1942. She and Z.T. were the parents of seven children: Frederick (who died in 1879), Artz L., Clifford S., Carrie L., Ralph Winfield, Clark & Jennie.
