Mrs. Mary Ord, Kin Of Noted General, Dies
Funeral services are pending for Mrs. Mary Norton Ord, member of a pioneer California family and resident of Berkeley since 1905 who died yesterday at her home at the age of 90.
Mrs. Ord, who lived at 2002 Webster Street, Berkeley, was the widow of Lieutenant Colonel E.O.C. Ord II, whose father was the famous Civil War general after whom Fort Ord is named.
Her late husband, who was born in the Benicia Barracks in 1859, organized the food relief program in San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake and fire.
Mrs. Ord was a native of Texas where her father was a judge when that area was a Republic and after it became a state. She met her late husband after he left Annapolis and went to the South, where his father was stationed.
General E.O.C. Ord, Mrs. Ord's father-in-law, commanded the Department of the Pacific for the United States Army for a number of years after the Civil War. He was a grandson of George IV of England and a second cousin of Queen Victoria.
Surviving are three sons, E.O.C. Ord III, a civil engineer for the United States government and a resident of Berkeley; Henry Norton Ord of Canada and J. Garesche, who was a Major General during the past war and now lives in Washington, D.C. and two daughters, Ellen F. and Mary Norton Ord of Berkeley.
