Charles Franklin (aka Taylor) HINES was the only* child of James Almont HINES ["Almonte" in some records] and Mary Ann/Anna TAYLOR, James's first wife. His parents parted ways before the 1 June 1880 US Census (possibly related to death of an infant sibling)*. In that census, Charles and his Mom are listed (sometimes erroneously transcribed with the surname HIND) in the home of Reverend Charles & Sophronia TAYLOR, her parents. Charles's father, a Civil War veteran, eventually (by 1884) moved to Oconto County, Wisconsin, where he married Violetta Imogene COLE with whom he had three sons (Henry Harrison HINES, John Alexander Logan HINES and Frank Willard HINES), half-brothers that Charles may never have known.
About 1882, Mary A née TAYLOR HINES remarried, to Seymour T DART. They had one* child, a daughter, Violet DART, born 6 July 1883 in Isabella Co, MI, and who died in Cleveland on 3 Dec 1899.

By mid-1898, Charles and his Mom's 2nd family were living in Cleveland, Ohio. The Spanish American War had started 25 April, 1898. On 20 June 1898, at Cleveland, Charles enlisted and was mustered in as a private in Troop C, First Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (Ohio National Guard). With the peace armistice of 12 Aug 1898, the war effectively ended while the Troop was waiting in Florida for transport to Cuba. Charles was mustered out with Troop C at Cleveland on 22 Oct 1898. The Treaty of Paris formally ending the War was signed on 10 Dec 1898, providing Cuban independence and the start of occupancy by the United States.
Charles again enlisted - on Jan 24, 1899 at Cleveland, in Company L, 2nd US Cavalry, US Army. He was discharged 11 Aug 1900 in Matanzas, CUBA, with the rank of Corporal. During this enlistment, his half-sister Violet DART had died.
Charles married Hilda Katherine BINNINGER of St Louis, Missouri, sometime between the tragic death of Hilda's mother, on 7 Jan 1902 (age 37, by suicide), and the fall of 1902. Her father had also just died tragically, age 43, by electrocution in a work accident, on 19 Sept 1900. Hilda was born 28 May 1885, in St Louis, so she was just 16 or 17 when married Charles
Their first child, Russell S HINES, was born in Isabella Co, Michigan in July 1903, where many of Charles's aunts, uncles and cousins (in Charles's mother's TAYLOR family) were living. His step-father Seymour DART's parents and relatives also lived in and near Mount Pleasant, Isabella Co.
By 15 Apr 1910 (census date), Charles, Hilda & Russell moved to San Francisco, where a 2nd son, Charles Taylor HINES (known as "Taylor") was born on 10 Feb 1913. Charles's mother and step-father, Mary & Seymour DART, were also living in 'Frisco by 15 Apr 1910. Seymour DART died 6 June 1914. Afterward, Mary lived for 3 or 4 yrs with Charles & Hilda at 755 Cole Street. Mary's whereabouts after this time are unknown (as of Aug 2012). Charles, like Seymour before him, worked on streetcars for United Railroads of San Francisco (URR) and its 1918 successor, the Market Street Railway Co.
Charles F and Hilda C HINES are listed in the 1920 Crocker-Langley City Directory (pg 844) as residing at 755 Cole St and his occupation a "conductor".
Charles died 22 Oct 1929 in San Francisco, at age 52. He was buried on 31 Oct 1929.

Hilda died 2 Dec 1952 in Santa Clara County, California and is also buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park near Mervyn, who died in 1964. Several of Mervyn's HENRY relatives are also buried in this same section.
