Detective Jim Whealen, DSN 2457, badge number 1495, graduated from the Saint Louis Police Academy on January 26, 1956, in class number 17. After graduating from the police academy, his first uniformed assignment was in the Bureau of Investigation, followed by subsequent assignments in the 6th, 10th, and finally the 8th district. On March 16, 1962, Officer Jim Whealen was the recipient of a Chief's Letter of Commendation for police work above the call of duty. Officer Whealen eventually left the department on March 3, 1964 to seek gainful employment in the private sector after having severe health issues pertaining to his heart. Officer Whealen served a total of 8 years, 3 months, and 25 days of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

In the latter years of his life, he left the insurance business and started working as a Sergeant for the Saint Louis University Campus Police Department as a "Line Platoon Supervisor" and "Watch Commander" on the 3 to 11 shift. A finer police officer you will not find. He was like a second father to me, a mentor, and my very best friend.

Mr. Whealen went back to school to further his education and was attending Florissant Valley Community College. In the afternoon of October 1st, 1987, he returned to his car and noticed that he had a flat tire on his vehicle. He was attempting to retrieve the spare tire from the trunk of his car when he suffered a fatal heart attack and slumped into the rear trunk. He was rushed to Christian Northeast Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the age of 56.

Mr. Jim Whealen was a veteran, having served in the United States Army from 03/26/1951 to 03/27/1954. He served with distinction in the 82nd Airborne Division and achieved the rank of Sergeant.

His first wife, Roberta, left him for the cardiologist who gave Mr. Whealen a by-pass operation.

Jim Whealen's second marriage was to the love of his life, Helen Marie (nee Holzum) Whealen. Mrs. Whealen's siblings changed her funeral arrangements at the last minute and had her buried in the family plot at St. John's Cemetery, Leopold, Bollinger County, Missouri.

Mr. Jim Whealen died on the same day as his father, James J. Whealen Sr., 2 years later to the day.
