Laverne Williams Channell, age 72, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. A lifelong resident of Greene County, she was born March 9, 1935 to the late James Mel Williams and Dorothy Dye Williams. In 1953 she graduated from Greensboro High School. She worked as a nurse for Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital for thirty-eight years in the nursery taking care of all the newborn babies. Laverne was a member of West End Baptist Church in Greensboro.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Maryland Channell, in July of 200l; a son, Michael "Mike" Channell in November of 2006; and a brother, Jimmy Williams. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Snipes and husband Jackie of Greensboro, GA; two sons, Scott Channell and wife Deborah of Greensboro, GA and Brian Channell and wife Denise of Greensboro, GA; sister-in-law, Gloria Williams of Milledgeville, GA; eight grandchildren, Lisa Goss and husband Clay, David Snipes and wife Jessie, Jeff Snipes and wife Tina, Keith Channell and wife Meredith, Joshua Channell, Seth Channell, Brelan Channell and Alan Channell; five great grandchildren, Hayden Goss, Grayson Goss, Jackson Snipes, Hadleigh Snipes and Eli Channell; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at West End Baptist Church in Greensboro with Rev. Wayne Usry and Rev. Robert Robinson officiating. Interment services will follow at Greenview Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are James R. "Bubba" Williams, Jr., Matt Thackston, Zack Thackston, Howard Channell, Mark Payne and Tim Payne. Honorary pallbearers are Tracy Christopher and Thomas Hattaway. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. Monday night at the funeral home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA, (706) 453-2626, is in charge of arrangements.
