Born in Dubuque, Iowa to Harry V and Dolly Smith. Harry was a railroad man who worked on the train that traveled between Chicago and Savanna, Illinois. Her mother Dolly died when Dolores was very young. Her father Harry remarried Emma (Buchacker) Mangeng. Unhappy with her step family, Dolores met the love of her life Frank Beck and married young, about 1927. Seeking opportunity they moved to Chicago with her older brother Kenneth Smith. Frank and Dolores forged a new life for themselves in Chicago and soon started a family of their own. They raised three sons and two daughters from their modest home on South Wabash Ave in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood. Dolores passed away within two weeks after her beloved husband Frank died.
