Jacob Giant, Sr., a pioneer of Allen County, died at his home in Jefferson Township Sunday, December 14. Illness was of short duration, the long and useful life closing in a restful sleep. In France, June 6, 1830, Mr. Giant was born. Ten years were spent among the scenes of his boyhood days and then, catching up the spirit that led men to the new world, he came with his parents to America. Stark County, Ohio, was the first home in the new land and for 12 years the young man was one of the sturdy workers of that county. In 1852 he was married to Miss Catherine Monier and once more the young man determined to try an unsettled country. Coming to Indiana, they settled on the farm upon which he had continuously lived. Here he met joy and sorrow as they came. Six children were born to them and in days of sorrow he saw four children called in death. In 1876 his faithful wife passed to the great beyond, leaving him to make his way alone with their two sons. After the marriage of his son, Joseph, the father made his home with the son.
Mr. Giant was one of the progressive men of Jefferson Township. Unassuming and conscientious, he worked for the welfare of himself and his neighbors. The long life was seldom assailed by illness and the rugged health brought him for a long life. The Giant farm in Jefferson Township is one of the first in the township, much of the improvement being planned by the aged man. He was a good neighbor and those who knew him best are those who speak loudest words of praise.
Mr. Giant leaves two sons-Joseph and Jacob, Jr.; one sister-Mrs. Margaret Gerardot; fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock at the residence, and 10 o’clock at St. Louis Catholic church, at Besancon.
