William Libbey was the son of William Libbey II and Elizabeth Marsh, born in Jersey City on March 27, 1855. He was the Director of The Elizabeth Marsh Museum of Geology and Archaeology and Professor of Physical Geography at Princeton University from 1884 to 1923.

The first recorded ascent of Mount Princeton, located within the San Isabel National Forest in Colorado on July 17, 1877, at 12:30 pm was by William Libbey.

In the 1912 Summer Olympics he won the silver medal as a member of the American rifle team in the silver shots competition. Mr. Libbey was also a colonel in the New Jersey National Guard. He died in Princeton on Sep 6, 1927, and is buried near President Grover Cleveland.
