Mary E Green was the daughter of William Henry Green, DD and Elizabeth Hayes. The wedding of Mary Green and William Libbey on December 7, 1880 was, according to the New York Times, "one of the largest and most brilliant weddings ever attended in Princeton." This notable wedding took place at the home of Rev. Dr. William Henry Green. As part of the festivities a train of Pullman cars traveled from Jersey City to Princeton. About 900 invitations were sent, many to prominent people in New Jersey.

Mary was the mother of Elizabeth Marsh, Amy Morse and George Kennedy. She was also the President of the Colonial Dames of New Jersey and active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, being a state regent and a Vice President of the General Society of the D.A.R. She was also President of the Foreign Missionary Society of the Presbytery of New Brunswick.
