Mrs Mary Ann Wood Passes to Her Reward

Death has claimed another of this section's oldest and most highly respected citizens, Mrs Mary Ann Wood, aged 89, who died Sunday morning Oct 23, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Dan A. Hively, near town. Deceased, owing to her advanced age, has been in feeble health for many months past, but for the few days preceding her demise her condition was not such as to cause alarm. She suffered a sinking spell Sunday morning which terminated in her death a very short time afterwards.

Burial took place at Spring Creek cemetery Monday, funeral services being conducted by Rev T. J. Justice, pastor of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev L. R. Ruble. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attended and paid respects to this good woman.

"Aunt Ann", as she was familiarly known, was born in Georgia Jan 22, 1839. She was married in that state to Tipton Hames, whose death occurred a few years after their marriage. Two children, who survive, were born to this union, Dr W. S. Hames of Blanchard Okla., and Mrs Dan A. Hively of Calico Rock. After the death of her husband in the Civil War, she was married to Allen F. Wood Sept 30, 1866 near Flat Rock, this county and she has resided in this section since then, her husband's death occurring a few years ago. Seven children were born to this union, four of whom survive as follows; Mrs Frances Forrister, Monett, Ark., R. F. Wood of Calico Rock; H. W. Wood, Pineville; and Mrs Maud Garner, Monett, Ark. One brother and a sister also survive – Mr G. W. Berry, Berry, Ark., and Mrs Patty Rodman of Colorado.

Mrs Wood was a true Christian character. She united with the M. E. Church, South in early life, and lived a very devout life. She maintained a most cheerful disposition even through her declining years and those who knew her and were associated with her feel the loss of a very dear friend and neighbor, whose influence for good has been far-reaching during a long and useful span of life.
