Jacob served as a Private in Company's E & F of the 1st Colorado Cavalry during the Civil War.

He was married to Frances J. Stewart in 1865.

They had seven children:
Gertrude Amelia Beyer
Vernon Thomas Beyer
Elinor Beyer b.February 1870 in West Virginia d.in infancy.
Ruth Esther Beyer
William Arthur Beyer
Herman Oscar Beyer
David Stewart Beyer.
