Charlie, as he was called, left the farm as a young man when he was about 18-20 years old and went to Toledo, Ohio, to live with his brother Fred. There he worked for the railroad (where Fred worked) for about one year. He then moved to Pontiac and lived with his sister, Marie (Kugler) Gix and her family. Charlie went to work for Kroger's and managed a grocery store on West Huron Street in Pontiac.
Charlie met Eloise Elizabeth Newman, known as Betty, and they were married October 2, 1928. They had 3 children: Robert, Donna & Janet.
After World War II, Charlie began working as a salesman for Stuart Smith Beverage Company in Pontiac and from there in 1967. Charlie was a Mason and belonged to Pontiac F&AM Lodge No. 21. He also belonged to the Iroque Grotto, where he was a Past Monarch. Charlie was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Pontiac.
Charlie and Betty built a cabin in Farwell, Michigan, near his brother Ted's cabin. They spent a lot of time there after Charlie retired. Charlie died 6 months after he was diagnosed with cancer on October 8, 1972, at the hospital in Mt Pleasant, Michigan.
