Alene Baxley was born April 5, 1926, in Archer, Florida, and passed away March 13, 2009, in Inverness. Our most giving and loving mother, sister, "Gammie" and friend slipped peacefully from our hands to the arms of her Savior. She was lovingly cared for by her youngest daughter Pam for the past seven years. She was the daughter of Edward Cleveland and Millie Butler Wear and the devoted and loving wife of Carey, who preceded her in death on March 15, 1994. She worked in the family business of Inverness Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Carey Baxley Insurance Agency. She was a charter member of the Inverness Golf and Country Club; president of the Inverness Women's Golf Association in 1963 and 1975; Girl Scout Leader; avid bridge player; Past Worthy Matron of Inverness OES #65; and a member of the First Baptist Church of Inverness.
Alene will be fondly remembered for her winning bridge hands; chicken pileau and church dinners; and signature chicken and yellow rice. She will be sadly missed by "George's Girls" at the Wednesday night dinners.
Survivors include daughters: Beverley (Joe) Capo, Inverness; Karen (Roy) Sulton, Sarasota; Sandra (Rhodes) Boynton, Yankeetown; Pam Schrek, Inverness; Sisters: Ernestine Weeks, Gainesville; Maxine (Bill) Frazer, West Point, GA; sister in law Laura Wear and brother in law Billy Porter of Inverness; grandchildren: Philip, Andy, David, Cheryl, Matthew, Katherine, Angela, Eric, Christopher; 10 great-grandchildren; many special nieces, nephews, and cousins; loving furry companion, Patch, and friends. All will never forget her Fourth of July and Easter lawn parties, and Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.
The Service of Remembrance for Alene will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Inverness. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery, Lecanto, Florida. Family will receive friends Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Inverness First Baptist Church Children's Ministry. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.HooperFuneralHome.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Inverness Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes & Crematory.
