A crowd of more than 200 persons attended the military services at Evergreen Cemetery on Friday, October 17, 1947 for Aviation Machinist First Class Daniel Thornburg Griffin, son of Mrs. Pernia M. Griffin, 544 E. Bijou Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Griffin was killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and was the first service member from Colorado killed during World War II. His body was temporarily interred in Hawaii and was returned home after the war ended. Reverend Franklin McDaniels, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, conducted the services. Mrs. Griffin, Colorado’s first Gold Star mother of World War II, is shown fourth from the right of the women seated at the grave. This photo appeared on the front page of the October 18, 1947 issue of the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph. Special Collections image 004-10535.
