He was born in Augusta County on Sept. 5, 1927, a son of Mrs. Manilla Deadrick Carter and the late Edward Carter. He was an employee of the maintenance department of the City of Waynesboro at the sanitary treatment plant. He was also a retired Sgt. E-6 of the U. S. Air Force. He retired from active duty on March 1, 1970 with more than 22 years service. He was a member of the Lynside Mennonite Church of Lyndhurst.
Surviving besides his mother, are his widow, Mrs. Wilda Mae Brydge Carter; and the following children by a previous marriage, one son, David Garland Carter; two daughters,, Mrs. Gene (Linda Jo) McFann and Mrs. Robert (Susan) Robbins, all of Dover, Del.; one sister, Mrs. Alvin (Mary Ann) Hicks of Charlottesville; two brothers, Jack Carter and William (Billy) Carter, both of Waynesboro; two grandchildren and five nieces.
He was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Carter.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the graveside in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Staunton, conducted by the Rev. Vance R. Brydge and the Rev. Herman E. Ropp. The Stuarts Draft VFW will perform military honors.
Pallbearers will be Joe Harris, Grayson E. Tomlin, Dale A. Via, Ralph Martin, Enos Grove, Encer Brooks, H. Jax Bowman, Robert Custer,, David Grove,, Conrad Willis,, Davis Lantz Willis, Eldon Ray Brydge, Carlton Brydge, Leland Brydge, John Hailey, Paul Carter, Norwood Wright and Rockwell Harris.
The body will remain at the Etter Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 this evening.
